What is your field of expertise?

Nutrition

What are your credentials?

Degree in Nutrition. Previous Certified Personal Trainer (this has expired now as I didn’t keep it up)

How did you get started in the profession?

I majored in Nutrition as my undergrad at Ryerson. I’ve always been interested in health and nutrition. I then became a certified personal trainer and worked at 3 different gyms in Toronto. I previously worked at two major sport nutrition companies as a marketer. I practice what I preach every day. I previously competed in a figure fitness show and have run seven marathons and regularly teach at clinics at the Running Room.

Is nutrition as important as exercise?

I think they are both important but if you want to really see results following a balanced diet and sticking to your nutrition goals are where you will see the biggest gains.

What is your opinion on all the fad diets out there?

I don’t believe in any of them. From low fat, low carb to following gluten-free many are difficult to maintain and not scientifically sound.

What do you consider healthy eating?

A balanced diet with whole foods that is high in fruits, vegetables and fiber, with a source of protein at every meal. It also includes 5-6 small meals throughout the day,

Are bread and carbohydrates the enemy like media makes them out to be?

No. I personally don’t eat bread or pasta but carbohydrates are an important part of a healthy diet. Everything in moderation is key to a healthy lifestyle.
