The medical term for an ear infection is “otitis,” and the condition is subdivided into three types. Otitis externa affects the outer ear, and is commonly called “swimmer’s ear.” It is characterized by swelling and redness, which make the ear painful to the touch. Otitis media is an infection of the middle ear, and is usually bacterial in nature. A feeling of fullness in the ear, in which the ear seems to be plugged with fluid, is the primary symptom. Otitis interna is an inner ear infection, which can affect sensorimotor skills and balance. Treatment depends on the nature of the infection, but may include ear drops, antibiotics or, in extreme cases, surgical interventions.
