Laryngitis is an inflammation of the larynx, an organ in the throat which is commonly referred to as the “voice box.” It can be caused by bacterial infection, or the result of prolonged periods of vocal strain. Additionally, heavy smokers are at increased risk for laryngitis. Treatment depends on the cause of the condition; if bacterial, antibiotics form the primary line of treatment. If it is a strain-related case of laryngitis, rest will be prescribed and medicines designed to soothe the throat may be given. The hallmark symptom of laryngitis is a hoarse, raspy voice, but throat pain and trouble swallowing may also be experienced.
