9 Types of Dementia That Aren’t Alzheimer’s

2. Dementia with Lewy Bodies

Also known as Lewy body dementia, this type of dementia is caused by abnormal deposits of the protein alpha-synuclein in the brain (specifically, the cortex). Healthline.com says such deposits “interrupt chemical messages in the brain and causes memory loss and disorientation.”

Common symptoms of dementia with Lewy bodies include troubles sleeping, visual hallucinations, memory loss, disorientation, and mobility issues that are similar to those with Parkinson’s disease.
