One in 24 Drivers Admit Drifting Off Behind the Wheel

A new U.S. study on driving practices is enough to make you think twice, or at least chug a cup of coffee, before getting behind the wheel.

The government study reveals that one in 24 U.S. adults admit to recently falling asleep behind the wheel. What’s worse is that health officials actually suspect this number is higher due to the fact that most drivers aren’t actually aware if they drift off for a few seconds while driving. However, being distracted, even for a few seconds, is all it takes for a serious and fatal road collision to occur.

The study surveyed the driving habits of 147,000 adults from 2009 to 2010 and indicated that:

  • Slightly more than 4-percent of American adults realize they’ve drifted off within the previous month
  • Male drivers were more prone to a brief snooze behind the wheel compared to female drivers
  • Drowsy drivers are typically between the ages of 25 to 34
